In May I took part in a fab and stimulating discussion about fiction and the boundaries of genre with Sophie Hamley, Pam Newton, James Bradley, and an incredibly enthusiastic audience. Since then the event has spawned a twitter account @GenresAttack, a blog (www.whengenresattack.wordpress.com) and now – of course – a sequel. I’ll be chatting with Mark Harding (the man behind the blog) and authors Georgia Blain, Mardi McConnachie and P.M.Newtown about gender and genre. Expect some talk about that much-maligned genre called “romance”, the pressure to write kick-ass or “positive” heroines, and current controversy about gender in Australian literary culture – including the new prize for women’s writing, the Stella Prize. With wine! and discounts! Wednesday 13th July, 7:30pm, Shearer’s Bookshop on Norton St. Event details here.
